Having faith in Finding Faith

3 years in a roll, the writer/director LazRael and I collaborated on 3 Christmas movies. They are A Miracle Before Christmas (2022), Christmas Angel (2023) and Style Me for Christmas (2024), later two produced by John Baldasare. All of them are super well received on BET Network. The clip below is a compilation from the these movies, colored by Mher Gregorian.

After the production of Style me for Christmas in Atlanta, LazRael kindly invited me to work on a different subject this time. In Laz’s words, let’s take this movie magic to another level. In Fall of 2024, we started the production of Finding Faith, again written and directed by Laz and produced by John Baldasare. The project invites a lot of people back from the previous production; therefore, it feels like a family. I started getting involved since table read; it is an interesting journey to see a film developed and come to screen at the end!

Shooting a feature within 20 days was never easy. We steadily follow our plans. One day at a time. As I recall the shoot was also during the heat waves in LA. We have brilliant talents who made the shoot really enjoyable! We have Paula Patton, Keith David, Nadine Velazquez, Loretta Devine, Demetrius Grosse and Stephen Bishop. Also I enjoyed working with Teruhisa Yoshida, a brilliant camera operator, the always gracefully in motion, Ryan Wilson, our Steadicam operator, and finally Eezy Dushene Foster, with whom we worked on 3 movies!

Since we are very disciplined in shooting ratio. We shoot for what we need. It streams line the post production process. The picture was locked in a very determined fashion! Mher the colorist did his magic on grading. And Yes! after the sound mix the movie is heading to another level!

Back in Shanghai filming again!

It has been 7 years since I left Shanghai in 2017. Coming back here to shoot a 45-day feature film is such a blessing! The following is my journal, my days working on this film, Raging Tiger, written and directed by Rui Li, who was previously the producer on our collaboration, Summer of Changsha, premiered at the 72nd, Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard (2019). Zu Feng in red was the director of Summer of Changsha, his directorial debut while he is also a well established actor in China. Huang Lu was the lead in Summer of Changsha, and this is the 3rd movie working with her! Huang Lu is brilliant in Little Fires Everywhere, starring with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington.

橫店, Heng Dian, is a city in Zhejiang province, where we prepped and picked up our gears. My first visit of Heng Dian was in 2007 filming a campaign for Doha Asia Game. This little village transformed into a modern city due to the biggest film studio in Asia, Heng Dian Studio. The whole town dedicated itself to filmmaking. One can find anything and everything in relationship to filmmaking. During covid, lots of rental houses moved from Beijing, Shanghai and else where to Heng Dian because there are always productions here, big and small. I picked up 2x Arri Super35 and a set of Arri Master Anamorphic.

Like every feature films in China, we have an opening ceremony. Praying for a safe and productive shoot as well as big box office!

We did work very hard for 30 days straight without a day off in this 3rd tier town named, Hu Zhou, which is about one hour and half driving distance west of Shanghai. The town offers a lot of locations.

One thing worth mentioning is the crews I worked with. A lot of them whom I have known since 2007, and everyone has grown in their own disciplines. Many of them are DPs now. We together have transitioned from 35mm film to the first Red One I brought to Shanghai in 2009 and up to the most current Arri super35.

After the company move, we finished our last 10 days strong in Shanghai. I recall the weather was very nice and perfect for the story we are telling. Again, shooting in crowded city is always difficult. Dealing with a lot of permits and early days because after a certain hour, only vehicles with local license pates can be on the express way.

I am due back to Beijing to do color grading for this film in April. Looking forward to seeing the final edit.

Huo Fang : You will savor its balance of salty and sweet.

Huo Fang is the name of a famous dish, popular in southern China, Hang Zhou and Su Zhou provinces.  The literal translation of the two words "Huo Fang" are "Fire" and "Square" respectively.  It's ham, rosy meat with plenty of fat, steamed to perfection and topped with a sauce of honey infused with rock sugar and lotus seeds.

It was one of my favorite dishes served at wedding banquets when I was a kid.  You eat it with hands, sandwiched the glazed ham with two pieces of fluffy white toasts.  The taste is rich and satisfying.   

The story starts about a stubborn old man who endures his wife's persistent nagging while struggling to find a dish, Huo Fang, a taste from his distant youth, however a bite of it puts to rest their life-long quarrels.

Synopsis:

Sitting in thoughtful silence, old man Yang cradles a cloth-draped jar, smoking absentmindedly outside an austere building. Though Yang's son tries to convince him to go home together, he would rather be left alone. To reduce conflict, the daughter-in-law arranges a car for him.

Reacting to his stubbornness, Yang’s wife bombards him with cynical complaints. However, the more she complains, the stronger he focuses on a single desire. That is to simply taste the dish named Huofang. Though it is getting late, Yang heads to an old authentic Shanghai restaurant where he learns the rich and delicious but greasy dish is no longer on the menu. The wife feels she is winning the debate as she chides him about his health.

Frustrated but not beaten, Yang continues his search with the driver's help and reveals the reason why he longs to savor the succulent dish. She recalls the most beautiful moment when they were both young. In the name of love, she resolves to end their conflicts. Yang closes his eyes in reverie at the taste of the delicacy and when he opens his eyes, he is alone. Yang realizes that his wife has passed away. He unveils the jar he carried beneath a cloth and reveals a picture of his wife when she was young. He sits in solitary silence in the nostalgic restaurant contemplating his lost love.  

Director's Statement:

The message I am exploring with Bittersweet is that in the name of love and caring, we often settle for or force our loved ones into certain roles in a relationship and sometimes it can become a suffocating cage. There is never an ideal moment to confront oneself or the other to make changes but if you do not resolve the situation, time will.

I was inspired by how my mother, now in her 70s, handled the loss of my father in 2011. Of course, at first she alternately felt lost, sad, confused or even angry but what was inspiring was her will to transcend that depression. She started taking interest in photography and volunteering in the community. I was impressed by her capacity for taking a leading role in her community and in finding herself after her loss.

With a sense of how my mother gracefully dealt with my father's death and renewed her own interest and passion for life, combined with some rather ambivalent insights toward marriage, I started to weave a short story about the relationship of an old couple. I wanted to explore the lifelong sacrifices we make for each other in a relationship. Even though Asian culture presents some unique cultural traits, I believe this story conveys a shared universal sentiment.

The basic relationship in this short is a two-way street: the Grandpa wants to have a bite of the dish, Huo Fang, directly after his wife's funeral. His wife, as a ghost or spirit, appears to him. She nags him and tries to discourage him from this impromptu decision. The initial desire for Huo Fang might seem only a whim, however after his request was first denied, the quest for Huo Fang has clearly become a mission for him. The deceased wife learns that having Huo Fang offers a connection between them rooted in reminiscence of their early romance. Finally, she graciously allows her husband a bite of the beloved dish as she lets go of him, leaving him for good.


The production of Huo Fang, Bittersweet, was conducted in the early winter of 2016 in Shanghai.  We had a quick 4 day shoot, averaging 6 to 8 hours a day.

A fading craft and space: Wu Zhou Barbershop and its owner Mr. Ding.

In Jan. 2014, I stumbled upon this barbershop on Wu Zhou road in Hong Ko district Shanghai.  It was a cold and sunny afternoon, exactly one month before Chinese New Year.

The shop was quiet and smoky; Mr. Ding, the barber, was there in his regular posture, leaning against a chair and smoking a cigarette.  His wife with her head down was knitting a scarf by the window at the corner of the store.  Together, they have been running this barbershop for the last 40 years.

My initial impression when I entered the shop was a sense of comfort, a sort of warm and cozy feeling, very inviting actually.  Every piece of furnitures, equipments and the sound from the beat-up radio seem to have a lot of stories behind.  I decided to find out more about this place.

"May I take some photos?" so I asked.  "Do whatever you want," said Mr. Ding "There are people coming here to take pictures all the time."  Just like that, I was constantly going back to this Wu Zhou Barbershop for the next 3 weeks.

In the process of following up with this place, I found out that this whole neighborhood will be torn down.  What a shame.  It gave me a sense of responsibility and opportunity to preserve this place with the only way I know - making a little film to save it with images and sound.  

My approach was to be like a fly on the wall, just observing what goes on in the shop with my camera.  People were so generous and understood the meaning behind my act.  So not once, people complained about me pointing the camera at them.  Instead, they were open to share their stories and memories of their experience with this barbershop. 

Mr. Ding's customers range from 5 years old to 90 years old, from migrant workers to people who came here since they were kids.  I saw a 70 years old lady taking her 90 years old mother here for a perm.  This shop has experienced thru every social movements and it survived.  The shop is a collective memory.       

Although it is sad to see this place go, it is also an opportunity for those folks to better their living condition.  "It is embarrassing to tell you that all these year, I have been living here without a flushing toilet." said Dr. Ding.  Old folks were no longer be able to climb up and down thru those narrow and steep staircase.  I appreciate that Mr. Ding gave me the access to witness the lives in this community and the folks' warm welcome and stories shared with me.
